Viral Videos and SEO

How often have you seen the term "Viral Video" lately? It seems to be everywhere.  How can you capitalize on this social media method to benefit your company’s SEO?  That is the million dollar question that I'm here to help answer.

My personal introduction to viral video occurred when I was watching CNN in late 2005.  This wasn't a daily news story as we see currently with this news agency, rather such a profound event that it trumped other global events to make it a topic of conversation.  What had caught the world by storm was a young Korean man known only as "Funtwo" playing a guitar solo.

Being the curious kind of person I am, I went and looked at this particular video.  The overall impression of the film work was nothing to write home about, but the young man could really make his guitar sing.  He was playing a rendition of "Cannon" and it was jaw dropping.  His fingers flew across those cords as if the young man was possessed.  If you enjoy this kind of music (just a guess but maybe "Rock Ballad"?), I encourage you to watch it (I have included it for your viewing/listening pleasure below).

So what makes this video viral?  Well much like me and my enjoyment of the music, others also enjoyed it equally as much.  As of this posting, the video has had no less than 71.6 MILLION views.

I'll bet your suddenly wondering how you could make a viral video and what it might mean to your bottom line in business.  The answer probably isn't what you think.  Let’s say you were this young man in the video.  You have a business selling photo copiers, but you just happen to have a knack for playing the guitar.  The two don't really relate do they?  Is playing a guitar like this going to help me sell copy machines?  To address both questions at the same time "YES and NO".  Allow me to explain.

Had you been this young man and linked this on your company website YouTube page, you would have 71.6 million viewers.  Of those 71.6 million viewers, how many of them may do exactly what I've just done (write an article/blog about it, and link back)?  Of those viewing it, how many would purchase a copier?  I highly suspect that very few would, BUT here is where the value comes from; you would have an immense amount of link-backs to YOUR social media page.  The more quality link-backs you have, the higher your rankings, the more likely you are going to hold that coveted spot on the search engines, the more likely you are going to sell more copiers.

So my yes and no answer means that you would in fact sell more copiers just because your site was ranked higher and found by more people.  This is what SEO is all about.  It's a brilliant method of using a completely unrelated viral video and yet another form of social media to boost the profit margin for your business.  I would however suggest as a matter of course that you focus on related video content in your social media and SEO efforts.

Without further adieu here it is...
