Googles "Mayday" release impacts Alaska SEO efforts

In the world of search engine optimization, we tend to focus much of our attention on what Google does.  It not only sets the bar, but changes the rules with every algorithmic change it performs.  In Alaska this is very prevalent because we are a land which relies heavily on tourism and the dollars it provides.  So being ranked in our Alaska SEO efforts can be the lifeblood of many local economies.  May of 2010 caused a giant stir in the global SEO markets.  Rewriting history again, we introduce the Google algorithm code named "Mayday".  Mayday has really set search engine rankings on their ear this month, albeit not necessarily in a negative or positive way (this view completely depends on your ranking at the time).

Mayday has for some reduced their search engine traffic by as much as 80%-90% and has further impacted their profit margins.  As we have watched this event unfold, the search engine optimization companies have struggled to understand exactly what has occurred with the Mayday release.  It would be prudent at this time to introduce you to a new term you may or may not have seen in the past.  "Long Tail Keywords" are simply a grouping of words used as keywords that are 3 or more words long (example: Alaska Search Engine Optimization).

Historically, Google has not had the computing power to effectively manage long tail keywords and would essentially guess as to their placement in the SEO environments.  Mayday however has changed all this.  Google released their new algorithm and filed a patent accordingly suggesting that their systems now had the capacity to manage long tail keywords in a useful method.  As a result of this shift, sites using long tail keywords have found themselves being re-indexed in an effort to better supply the focused results of the average search user.  So some sites that didn't find ranking because larger well known sites engulfed this market suddenly find themselves being ranked in their respective niche market, while at the same time sites using long tail keywords that were ranked by the guessing mechanism equally find themselves struggling for traffic.

When the dust settles from this recent set of changes, the internet search market according to Google may look much different than in the past.  There is however nothing to fear as Google performs a lot of updates on a regular basis (last year more than 500 updates to the algorithms were performed).  If however there was a defined moment in time to review your search engine optimization and Alaska SEO practices, this may very well be it.  Even as I write this article, Googles newest algorithm continues to offer up new and unexpected information further allowing SEO companies to better understand the overall current impact.
